RE-STORE// The Record of Time

Restore is a knitted textile collection for fashion womenswear based on my personal experiences. This project was inspired by a piece of ageing furniture located in my family home, and repaired by my grandfather. The furniture is a woven rattan table, my grandfather repaired it with plastic strips. This led me to think about why people choose to repair things, rather than get a replacement. Repairing adds value to the original object and leaves a mark of usage, reflecting an owner’s personal experience through the interaction with that object. This cannot be achieved by replacement. By taking advantage of both handcraft and machine techniques, this project aims to celebrate imperfectionsand raise the audiences’ emotional engagement.

Furthermore, this collection underwent two phases. An initial research was conducted on artist exhibitions, book and documentaries, which subsequently inspired my designing elements. Further, I applied a restoration method (Mending technique) into my textile works. Considering it as a therapy of keeping myself calm under this pandemic, I leveraged mending’s knowledge gained from pervious studies and integrated my personality into my mending works.
