SEVIL FEKRI

Sevil Fekri is a designer carving novel and challenging approaches to fashion.

Born in Iran and raised in Scandinavia, she studied at Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, and completed her Masters in Fashion Design at Royal College of Art in 2021, where she has been shortlisted for the patent-granting InnovationRCA.

Her industry experience encompasses a wide spectrum. She has assisted Gareth Pugh, working on photoshoot preparation and set assistance at Show Studio; and worked with French artist and performer Olivier Sagazan, executive pattern assistant at Phoebe English and Roland Mouret. She has additionally contributed to handwork and fabrication for Custom Christina Aguilera looks for Gareth Pugh x Virgin Voyages event as well as Custom worn by Niki Minaj for her video Krippy Kush in 2018.

Sevil’s themes are atypical of fashion, encompassing culture and philosophy. Fekri holds a particular interest in cultural identity and the ephemerality of life that all have in common, regardless of where on the map we are placed. Executed with a characteristic austerity, her work glides effortlessly between Art and Design as she explores ideas across disciplines with differing degrees of intensity, whilst staying fluid and considered in her attitude towards the body.

Despite her love of research, it is never a literal interpretation, rather it is absorbed into construction, the process of making and a feeling that is communicated with the audience.

Meticulous research is absorbed into the construction of the pieces. The process of making is communicated to and felt by the audience.

Fekri’s practice acts as an ongoing dialogue, with autobiographical elements woven into her work.

The MOMENT is always escaping

Recording is recovery

An approximation of that which has FADED.

As an artist and designer, Sevil is intrigued by the complexity that is embedded in the simplicity of human life—by how disposable yet valuable the mundane day to day can be.

The root of her work is in an appreciation for the overlooked, the ugly, that draws inspiration from Arte Povera. Fekri’s pieces comment on the fast pace of today’s disposable culture and society.

Through her work, she translates the day-to-day into challenging shapes, silhouettes and materials, capturing the moment caught in tea bags and cups by blowing up the scale of these items and creating installations of found, abandoned objects.

She seeks and brings attention to beauty, the grace and challenges of life.

In this collaboration, the two designers worked on one-off collectable pieces all made from waste materials. Injecting wit and humour into the designs whilst capturing intimate moments we have when sharing a cup of tea.

Questioning how we perceive fashion in contrast to art and how we value luxury items and the day to day waste.

Our lives are in a constant state of push and pull. Like an invisible natural force.

You can't go back-

You can't undo-

Through this rises up the idea of "teabag as an object of time and memory".

How do you feel when you think of time?

It is like an abstract force and tension, pushing and pulling.

The invisible force is reflected in the tension point of the fabric, helping the silhouette to maintain its form. By using her raw draping method she finds the right tension points in the fabric and starts a dialogue between herself and the garment
